Tip of the day idea. Reply  Edit

I was sitting here cleaning my vest, shoes, etc. and I thought a good idea for this forum would be some tips of the day, week, whatever. Sort of like the clever tips and ideas.
The safety tips are great but how about the little things? Here are some starters.

Your best method of cleaning your vests, turnout gear, whatever.

Your best way to polish your shoes or keep a polish.

Car, truck cleaning. (air freshener?)

Uniform maintenance. (I desperately need help with my creases)

Gun or tool maintenance.

Workout routines.

Organizational ideas. (for those in management or instructors)

I look forward to some great tips and ideas. I apologize for not having a tip to get us started hence the idea for tips!!

Boot/ Shoe shining Tip: A military buddy of mine uses Mop and Glow to shine his boots. It's much faster than traditional shoe polish and it gives the leather a shiny deep black luster. I've also used Pledge or similar dusting products in a pinch to shine up my shoes quickly before heading to court.

Be safe

The only problem with the mop and glow is after being in the sun for a while there starts to be a discoloration. Remember when I was in the Marines some guys would apply it as a quick fix just before inspection, the only problem was if they had to stand out in the sun for awhile you could tell from what direction the sun was shining as that side of the boots began getting a cloudy discoloration in the polish.

That is true... always a good thing to keep in mind. I work the night shift so I really don't have to worry about working in direct sunlight.

Great idea for a topic!

I use Ozium air freshner for my car (WalMart or any auto parts store.)
Dont worry about creases, I use the cleaners (dont like washing/ironing my uniforms)

I really need a great tip for clean my duty belt/mag holders etc (nylon weave).

Got an extra pair of search gloves (the puncture proof type), they can serve as fishing gloves when handling toothy critters.

If you have a problem with your vest ridin up on you... tie a good sized knot in the tails, it will catch the band on your pants and keep it down.

This may only help those pot belly guys like me lol.

This may sound a little nuts, but it works! To clean nylon gear:
Use a stiff bristle brush to get as much dirt/debris off the nylon.
Break down the belt into seperate parts; mag pouch, cuff case, etc.
Use laundry stain remover on stain/grease spots.
Wash in warm water/gentle cycle, with Woolite Dark Laundry wash.
Air dry to avoid shrinkage on some of the cheaper brands of ballistic cloth.

PS. If you don't have extra carriers for your ballistic vest, "Febreze" it between washings.

Tip of the day is a GREAT idea.

I've heard the same thing about how to clean nylon gear and have done it.

It isn't a sick person who stabs someone 47 times to kill them.
It is a sick person who counts the stab wounds on the corpse.

Here is the recipe for an inspection quality shine.
Brush shoes thoroughly.
Wipe down with damp cloth.
Use Kiwi Scuff Magic, especially on scuffed parts.
Option: Touch up with sole and edge dressing.
Buff with soft cloth or women's nylon.
Amway has a spray on shine for shoes that is dynamite!
Apply in thin coats to desired shine.
If done properly, it will look like corfam.

For quick cleaning, I carry lysol wipes. Also, I usually lysol (spray) everything even the bottoms of my boots before I walk into the house. Don't want to carry any crap into the house with me.

No Posts in a while.

I am a PPCT GAGE ( Ground Avoidance Ground Escape ) Instructor.

This is at least some type of defence for all of the MMA Wannabe's out there.

To help get yourself in shape and to learn how to not panick go talk to the Local High School wrestling coach and "roll" with him or have him pick some of his best guys in your weight class and "roll with them as well as the guys from the Higher and Lower weight classes as well. as we all know you dont always have the size advantage in a fight.

By "rolling" with these guys you are building your stamina as well as conditioning yourself to get back up on your feet in a fight.

PLUS this is FREE TRAINING!!!!!!

"Uniform maintenance. (I desperately need help with my creases)"
If the crease issue is mainly for inspections, when I was in the Marines we would turn our shirts and utilities inside-out and spray the creases with spray on starch.

Turn the uniform right side out and iron the creases. The starch sets and you will have knife edge creases.

Never ever spray the outside of the uniform as the starch will harden into a flaky white covering that you would be sure to fail any inspection with!
