Boating tip of the day Reply  Edit

If you are going to go fishing without spare fuses (as I did today), at least take a pack of gum!!! 20 amp fuse blew on outboard dead in the water in the middle of the lake!! Pull out trusty pack of wrigleys take the wraper (foil side out) wrap end of fuse plug back in and fish out the rest of the day!!!

Glad you did not experience a fire too.

There is a reason the fuse blew and the alluminum allows the wire to be the weak link. This is what causes most fires in boats.

Nope no fire just simply a blown 35 cent fuse. This is just a tip to get you back to the landing!!! Fuses don't last forever and just because a fuse blows doesn't mean you have a wiring problem Again this was a simple solution to a simple problem and is in no way a permanent fix!!

I would guess that more times than not a fuse blows because of a wiring problem.
To me, this would be like putting a penny in a fuse in a house......definitely NOT a good idea.

I agree with Al. If a fuse blows or a breaker trips...there IS a problem, somewhere!

He was trying the smoke test to see where the problem was.

I agree, don't try it.

The quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world.

I'VE done it a thousand times in almost everything that had a battery in it. When you have miles to walk or swim you'll do it too. Just a quick fix not long term.

A better tip would have been.... I did something stupid today and used a gum wrapper to make a temporary fuse to get me in. Luckily I did not start a fire.

Tip: Make sure you carry extra fuses in your boat.

I blew a fuse didn't have another in the boat and I was night fishing about a half mile from the boat ramp. Making a long story short I swam my boat back to the ramp at 300am in the pitch black because I had worn down two trolling motor batteries with crappie lights. I just kept hearing the theme song for jaws, well I will never do that again now I always make sure I keep some spare fuses.

You are correct! How stupid of me!! instead of fixing the problem and wasting the rest of my day catching largemouth of grass beds, I could have enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of paddling my 20' bass boat the five miles back down the lake to the landing or better yet ruined someone elses day by flaging them down for a tow! Why didn't I think of that

I think that is one of those tips most people would/should not share with others (liability issues) but most all would do it when in a bind.

Or you could carry $3 worth of spare fuses in your boat and risk fire

have you noticed that all electrical equipment runs on smoke? seems as though as soon as you release the smoke from the device, it dies.

I probably would have just pulled the fuse to like the aerator pump or bilge pump or something not absolutely necessary and put it in the blown fuse spot to get me in.

But hey I guess no one thought of that.

Steno, I'm with you on this one. I'd do whatever it takes. Leave it to the armchair quarterbacks on here to question your actions. You've learned your lesson and I'm sure you carry extra fuses now (or would pull one from another component in the boat) but you did what you had to to get home.

Or to those that are prepared because they know the risks of a non-fused circuit

Everybody is entitled to an opinion. I can't help the fact that yours is wrong.

Thanks and actually I did think of pulling another fuse but the fuses for aerator pump and ext. are different type. Yes plenty of extra fuses now even in the truck!!

And my wife used to make fun of hauling around so much "crap"!

Extra trailer bearings, seals, hubs, rotors, fuses, Gang load of tools and pullers, nuts and bolts, spray cleaners, grease & oil, wood blocks, flash lights,FUSES, specific taps and dies!

Heres a tip for ya! If you are gonna carry extra parts with you say like wheel bearings for trailer.....you might wanna get a 3 leg puller and a descent one. I've had a bearing go out before that dang near welded the bearing on the spindle from the heat(HARD to see smoke while driving at night or in the fog). Well the puller will help you get the inner part of the bearing off the spindel shaft.

I was dragracing at Rockingham Dragway one weekend. Fuse in my linelock kept blowing, keeping me from doing a proper burnout. My buddy took my last good fuse and wrapped a candybar wrapper around it. It worked fine rest of the night and I actually wound up winning the race

+1. I'm sure we have all done something we should not have to get home, or out of a bind. If it is a short term fix to get back to the launch, then I say do it. Now, it it's 3 months down the road and it is still there, your a dumba$$.

I carry 2 spare fuses of every size in my boat. I have only needed to replace one and that was a minor issue I did once back at the ramp. I then soon replaced it to have 2 again. I keep them in a small Plano bait box along with other spare parts such as: Spare trolling motor pull cord and handle, 2 spare hull plugs, various spare stainless screws, etc.

The whole thing takes up very little space in a back compartment.
