Just returned from Colorado where a 41 year old Sergeant was shot to death Saturday night. Two other officers shot and wounded. Sergeant had nineteen years service and I was his FTO when he started. Been to serveral officer funerals over the career span but this had to be the most emotionally draining event I had ever been to in my life. Even though I retired from law enforcement it will take a while to get ovet this one! Now, my son started the academy TODAY! (cobra 190d) I'm having so many different feelings going through my mind right now its' crazy. Say a prayer please. UD/ My old commander just told me this officers name was just put on the Wall in Washington DC. Going to go see myself, leaving Thanksgiving Day. Bad part is this is the third name on this wall for a fellow fallen officer I worked with. This will be my fourth trip to the wall!!
Yeah funerals are hard to deal with. I have been to several and I think the hardest one was when my Chief passed away several years ago. That was a tough one not only because he was my Chief but also a good friend and only in his mid 40's..
Prayers are with you, hard times for all of us in law enforcement. My dad was a Chicago Police Officer for 40 years, retired in 92 and still cashing checks from the city. I followed his footsteps. I now have 20 years on in Chicago and am a Swat Sergeant. All I can say is trust your son, he will be fine. Police Officers are a great breed and learn how to take care of them selves. I once had a sergeant who told me " Don't believe them, Don't believe them, they know who you are, you don't who they are" I live by this and it has gotten me through to this point and I have always worked in the West side of Chicago (ghetto). Love it and would not have it any other way. Love to work but love to Fish even more. Tight Lines John
