They make a product called Damp-rid or something like that. It comes in a box or bag and you can hang it to take the dampness outa the air in enclosed spaces. I hang one in my gun cabinet during the summer to eliminate any chance of surface rust. Im sure it would work well in a boat, never thought about it but now i will when it comes time to store it for the winter. Check for it at your local grocery store, or maybe a bed bath and beyond type place"I CANT OUTSMART MANY, BUT I CAN OUT DUMB THEM ALL"

I put a couple of handfuls in an old sock in each compartment and it keeps everything dry. An amazing feat here in Alabama!

if you want to go a cheaper route, put a small bag of charcoal in each compartment. charcoal has a super high absorbtion rate and even higher if you get the pre treated with hydro carbons, (the bag you just pour on the grill and stick a match to). if you know someone who works in the medical field at a hospital, there is a powder substance used to keep blood/gastric secretions from comming out of NG canisters. this is probably the most absorbant thing in the universe. one 4oz application will completely solidify 1 gallon of anything liquid in about 3 mins. get your hands on some if you can, if not try the charcoal.

you can also go to your local pet store and by bulk carbon in the jars and also by the mesh media bags they sell here too. Fill the mesh bag with the carbon and toss it in your storage compartment. It's not the best @ absorbing wetness but it's awesome at keeping odd smells 2 bay. I put these in my truck during hunting season. Just put the bag in front of where the air is pulled in to recirculate though the cab. Also I keep my camo in large duffel bags during the off season with one of these bags tossed in there. Works great!

I have been using this for a very long time... have to buy the exact product you describe... not just any cat litter. I put it in cut up nylon stockings tied at both ends. I have it in each compartment and in my tackle box... works great!
