Cable steering vrs. hyd. steering Reply  Edit

I have a 99 bullet 21xdc with manual steering and it is pretty hard to steer when you running and I was wondering what you guys liked better, Hyd. or Manual. This thing is very hard to control when it starts to chine because of the tight steering. my buddy says that is what you want, but he has yet to drive it and I think that its just to hard to steer. Im either going to get new cables or go with the hyd. set up. What do you guys think.

I know that when I went to hyd steering on my previous boat I would not go back to cable. But new cables may help with your control.

Hydro by far. You will not believe the difference. New cables may help, but nothing like power assist. It is safer, you'll be able to one hand the wheel. That is one of the biggest reason I got rid of my old boat for a new one.

I have had both. I perfer the cable. reason being you can feel whats going on. Also if something goes wrong with it (break a cable or any thing else) you still can steer the boat most of the time. If hydro goes out you are dead in the water.

Sounds to me like you have a bad cable. A new set of properly adjusted cables should give you the control you're looking for in that boat.

Hyd steering is very easy to turn, but does have just a bit of play in the system and does not offer the "feel" of a cable system. JMHO!

Most of the time you can go to http://www.teleflex.com and find the right cable. I went through this same thing and for the money I went with the Teleflex dual cable with the no feed back and tilt wheel and love it. It was the third of the price compared to the hydro. IMHO

I would never go back to cable. My sea star systems have never failed me. They are reliable and a dream to steer. As far as install basic knowledge and the installation manual is all you need. Bleeding the system is alot easier with 2 people. Just my 2 cent.

Go Hydro. Even with new cables you are going to have it pull fairly hard. Before I got my hydro I would have to pull the wheel to the left at WOT just to keep it straight. Now, I can steer with ease. While you are at it, get the sterring wheel trim and tilt lever. It makes running in rough water alot easier.

If you are use to cable there will be a ajustment period when go hyd. It has taken seat time to master chine with hyd. Its a differnt feel.
