I posted this in the Lounge but on the advice of another I posted it here. Mods if this is not acceptable please feel free to remove as you see fit.

I do want to add that I respect and admire all officers of the law and firefighters/first responders! thank you for what you do!

Ok, say there is someone traveling to Michigan to enjoy our lakes and spend some money.....they are trailering a boat from out of state. A state that does not require trailer plates (Tennesee, Wisc, etc.).
What is this person supposed to do when they get here? Get a temp registration? Get a Mi trailer plate?

How is this supposed to work?

I have been pulled over before with a Tennesee boat for not having trailer plates. I explained that Tennesee doesnt require them. The officers reply was "Ok, but Michigan does"....He didnt know what I was supposed to do either.

Does anyone else?

For the record the officer let me go, I am just wondering what Michigan is thinking by enforcing their plate laws on an out of state trailer and boat?

A friend is town filming on St Clair and he got pulled over tonight on the way to his hotel with a Wisc boat, no trailer plate required. He was issued a ticket from a Macomb County Sheriff. Even though he had registration for the boat (which the officer never asked for).....

Wondering....

"Place of residence" determines trailer plate or not. Your "filming" buddy that received a ticket is in the clear. Only problem is that he now has to take the time to take care of the situation. Pretty pathetic to even issue the ticket. It's pretty simple to see what state the boat is registered in by the registration numbers on the hull!!! It's the same here in Alabama. No tag required for boat trailers.... (YET)

If it hasn't been too long since your friend got the citation, he may be able to contact the County Prosecutor and get it dismissed. Never hurts to try! All he would have to do is fax a copy of his D/L and vehicle reg to show residency of WI.
Anyone else's thoughts about that?

Can't beleive the supervisor of the issuing officer let this stand. Ticket should never have been written. Training issue here for sure. One phone call should take care of any obligations.

Those numbers on the side with the state regs usually talk louder than the plates...
