Cold Weather Fishing Tip Reply  Edit

Here's a cold weather fishing tip I'd like to share. (Used it today while fishing in the snow.)

Almost everyone has seen those little air activated hand warmers and used them to try and get the feeling back in their fingers on a cold day. Most people throw them in their pockets followed by their hands. That works, but you have to stop fishing!

Other people, like I used to do, stuff them into their gloves to try and keep their hands warm while they fish. I always found doing so a bit clumsy though especially when handling the rod, always being afraid that I'll toss the rod overboard during a cast. Anyway, both methods work, at least to a degree, but I figured out a new one several years back that works just a little bit better and allows you to keep fishing without interruption.

What I do is take the hand warmers and stuff them up my sleeve so they rest against the veins in my wrists. You know, the ones you want to cut when you’re ¾’s of the way through winter and cabin fever is at it’s worst!

The warmers stay/are held in place all day, thru hundreds of casts, by the elastic band in the sleeve of my long johns top, the buttoned sleeve of my shirt and the elastic band in the sleeve of my jacket. The system probably works 10-15% better than sticking them in your gloves, and tons better than in your pockets because it’s literally warming the blood going into your hands. Even with gloves off the difference is noticeable.

Don’t get me wrong, theses warmers don’t get super hot to begin with, but stuffed up in your sleeves and against your skin, they probably stay a little warmer than would in your pocket and that extra heat is an added bonus that is transferred directly into your hands.

Sounds crazy I’m sure, but try it. It does work and can make fishing on cold, windy snowy days much more pleasurable!

Therma-Care makes gloves for arthritis and these work great for cold weather fishing. The palm side is thin gauze so it doesn't interfere with feel but the back is the heat up stuff... I love 'em. You can find them in the pharmacy section at most stores.

I just live in the south where such tactics aren't necessary.

I guess I'm a light weight. When it gets down to 45, I like gloves!

The quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world.

wonder if there was a way to attach them to the rod handle, like with tubegauze or something like that?

I'm gonna try your way though, I can see how it'll work...

You can also take the Thermal heat wraps for your back and place them over your kidneys and stay warm . same principal as placing the smaller ones on your wrist ,just more blood supply

Thanks - great tip!

I guess the old mountain men used to say "If your feet are cold, put your hat on." Same thing if your hands are cold, a warm (or warmer) hat can also help to keep your hands warm because the body slows the circulation to your hands and feet to keep your head warm to prevent brain damage.

Hmmm. Maybe that explains what's wrong with those people that icefish!!!

FYI - I tried this today and it worked but I got a couple of nasty blisters. Don't know if it was the heat or chemical burn. Next time I won't put them right against my skin.

To alleviate the burning issue, I take the hand warmer and place it on top of my sleeve over my wrist, then I use the large wrist sweat bands they use in basketball and put it over the hand warmer and the sleeve. Keeps sleeve down and the hand warmer in place over the sleeve.

You need a job like mine servicing roof top units in the winter. Your hands will get used to the cold when you have to handle the cold metal doors and fixing the units with no heat.
