Does your department have set shifts or do you change every 3 or 4 months? I work in a department where your shift changes. I like working the 0000 to 0800 shift and there is only one other person who also likes that shift, we hate it when we have to change.

We have set shifts. I work 22:00 to 06:00. We used to have the 00:00 to 08:00 shift but we changed a few years ago and it's much better now. I just feel for the day shift guys, having to get up at 04:30 or even earlier has to suck. I'll stick to the graveyard shift myself. Our department did the rotating shifts many years ago. They rotated every month back then and everyone hated it.

My department has been on 12 hour shifts since around November of 2008. I work 7pm-7am and I have enough seniority to stay on nights for as long as I want to.

We pick our shifts twice per year (April and October) and shift pick is based on seniority. I couldn't stand changing shifts every 3-4 months like some area departments do. Some places rotate their officers from 7a-3p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a, and a split shift that goes 7p-3a.

That is what we have, but add in a 4a-12p car.
I was working in a jail and made Sgt with weekends off, but I didin't go to the academy to be a jailer.

I work 6p-6a. I wouldn't change it for anything. I love nights and I love the days off you have with 12hr shifts. We've had 4 12hr shifts since I started in early '08. Every other weekend off, works for me!Eric

Obviously a leo circle jerk going on in this thread...

Like most every fireman in the country, I work 24 hour shifts, and work 10 days a month......before vacation time, so it really only averages out to like 8 days a month.....ahhhhh life is good...can't ever recall being cussed out for being a fireman......

12 Hr. shifts with one short day (8 hrs.) every 2 weeks. The way it's scheduled I only work 7 days a pay period. (2 weeks) and I get a 3 day weekend every other week. Shift is 5am. to 5pm. but it seldom works out that way. This past weekend was my weekend to work and I didn't get finished until after 6pm. and Sunday I got home at 7pm. But I still LOVE THIS JOB!!!
