One of the cardinal sins when buying a bass boat? Reply  Edit

I think I did it.
Being no experiance in the the feild of fiberglasss boats My father and I purchased a 1990 19Ft Champion with a 175 mariner came with a 6 in. jackplate. I guess we were overtaken by the awesomness! Bought it for $3500 with no problems only condition was motor had to run and she still screams. So we after 30 mins of total exposure of the bass boat world we towed it to the back garage. It sat for two days I brought it out to the sunlight to look at the whole package I thought to adjust the trim with the transom saver still connected. Oh man the motor didn't move but I got to see the hair line crack running the length of the transon below the motor mounts on the inside of the boat. So am I stuck with an broken transom can I find a bracket to mount there or is it major back surgery on my new baby? I will include pics later. Live about 3 miles from the boat. And if the know how much would the fix cost?

depending upon how bad the crack is, and where it is on the transom, the repair might not be too bad. just check with several fiberglass shops and get a quote from each of them. in fact, i would take it to several places for them to physically see it, test it, and then give you an idea of how much it will cost to fix.

is it leaking? if it is, that is a big problem. if it is not leaking, then it might not be that big of a deal.

good luck.

If it cracked that easy I would be concerned about the transom being rotted.

Which would explain the really good price...Maybe they knew something ahead of the sale.

Check out the Restoration Forum. Read some of the transom rebuild threads.

Are you sure it isn't just a Gel coat crack?? Those are fairly common in that area???
