Change or leave it alone? Reply  Edit

I just bought a 95 Stratos 268 with a 115 Evinrude Looper. Prop is a 24" Raker (no jackplate). I'm satisfied with performance, but RPM at wot is 4800. Shouldn't it be closer to 6000? Top speed is 43mph (gps). Should I be faster? It's fast enough to suit me, I just want to make sure I'm running the engine the way it is supposed to be run. I've been told to go to a 19" prop. Any thoughts?

I could be wrong but I think your rpm range is 5500-6000.

If thats the case, you would probably want to prop it to 5700?

Lugging your motor is a bad thing.

don't lug the engine like that. It will kill it.

I think a 20'' raker would be the ticket there.

Thanks for the advice. So I currently have an aluminum prop. Is the stainless worth the extra $ or do I go for a 20" in aluminum? What other things should I consider before prop shopping?

Alan....Welcome to the BBC!!!

My friend has the same boat/motor combo as you. He's running a 21p Renagade prop. His top end is 53mph @ 5600rpm GPS.

I have a 273 Stratos and have ran the Renagade. I can say it is my favorite prop, great hole shot and handling!!!! You can't go wrong with that set up!

Thought I'd update this post. I bought a new 20" Raker to replace the 24" Raker ($240 on eBay). The RPM's went from around 4800 to 5500. Speed went from 43mph to 50mph fully loaded with a partner(500 lbs). The holeshot was good with the 24 but became exceptional with the 20. I am really happy with this setup. Thanks to all those who gave their $.02, it really helped. By the way, Mike is the man, so helpful!
