Bottom line regarding setback, it probably doesn't matter much whether it's 12" or 14" with the 225 Pro Max. You might see ~1 mph more at 14", but you may notice slight trade-offs (read on). On the other hand, a hydraulic jackplate is mandatory (IMO) to get the Stroker to fly like it should. You have to get that lower unit up out of the water. People (except Kurt
) typically run 2" to 3" above the pad at WOT.I'm at 12" setback on my 1999 Stroker. I like the overall fishing performance at that distance (better holeshot, rub rail on the stern is always above water, nimble handling). But I run heavy all the time. Fishing is by far #1 for me. I NEVER empty rod lockers, unload the 50 lbs of muskie lures, and take off the trolling motor to hit numbers. I often fish with 3 people in the boat. Others have tried 10" setback and I believe most of them went back to 12" or more. Depending on how you're set up, you might not notice any difference in feel between 12 and 14.
I have a 350 lb Frankenrude motor (3.1L Johnson powerhead, SS mid, Merc 2.5L Sporty), and this drives differently than the bigger 505 lb Opti's, so I'm not speaking for those guys. For a 3L Opti, the rub rail is ~at the water line with 15" setback with 3/4 tank and one guy standing on the back deck (unless there's a lot of weight up front). If you're primarily after top end, your 375 lb Pro Max will likely run a little faster at 14", and it's light enough to have it back that far. If you can afford to experiment, that would be the best. Someone might be willing to lend you some extensions for testing purposes. I'll see what I have laying around.
You'd have to confirm with Chub, but I don't think there's an issue with putting your 225 PM back at either 12" or 14". I don't think there's enough weight + torque to cause problems. Chub might moan a little if you told him you were strapping a 300 on though...
