Questions for the Stroker Pros Reply  Edit

I have a 95 Stroker with a Merc 225 Pro Max and want to add hdryaulic steering and jackplate for better handling. Questions.

#1- What type/brand steering and jackplate are best for performance?

#2- Jackplate Set-back- Don't want too much stress due to age of transom?

#3- How much speed will I get out of adding these 2 items?

#4- Approx. cost of each item and where to purchase ( KY) ?

Thanks for your help.

One the Jackplate most are running Detwiler. I am at 12" but most are around 14".
The Bobs Jackplate seems to be a good choice as lone as it is a new one.
In fact I think that is what I would buy if I was buying a new jackplate.

Cost is going to depend on the size that you get. But it should fall somewhere between $700 and $1000 if you do your homework. (Search the net)

Bottom line regarding setback, it probably doesn't matter much whether it's 12" or 14" with the 225 Pro Max. You might see ~1 mph more at 14", but you may notice slight trade-offs (read on). On the other hand, a hydraulic jackplate is mandatory (IMO) to get the Stroker to fly like it should. You have to get that lower unit up out of the water. People (except Kurt ) typically run 2" to 3" above the pad at WOT.

I'm at 12" setback on my 1999 Stroker. I like the overall fishing performance at that distance (better holeshot, rub rail on the stern is always above water, nimble handling). But I run heavy all the time. Fishing is by far #1 for me. I NEVER empty rod lockers, unload the 50 lbs of muskie lures, and take off the trolling motor to hit numbers. I often fish with 3 people in the boat. Others have tried 10" setback and I believe most of them went back to 12" or more. Depending on how you're set up, you might not notice any difference in feel between 12 and 14.

I have a 350 lb Frankenrude motor (3.1L Johnson powerhead, SS mid, Merc 2.5L Sporty), and this drives differently than the bigger 505 lb Opti's, so I'm not speaking for those guys. For a 3L Opti, the rub rail is ~at the water line with 15" setback with 3/4 tank and one guy standing on the back deck (unless there's a lot of weight up front). If you're primarily after top end, your 375 lb Pro Max will likely run a little faster at 14", and it's light enough to have it back that far. If you can afford to experiment, that would be the best. Someone might be willing to lend you some extensions for testing purposes. I'll see what I have laying around.

You'd have to confirm with Chub, but I don't think there's an issue with putting your 225 PM back at either 12" or 14". I don't think there's enough weight + torque to cause problems. Chub might moan a little if you told him you were strapping a 300 on though...

Thanks guys, keep em coming. I am not really looking for speed as much as handling when on pad. I have "no feedback" steering and it's difficult to hang on to due to all the torque. What is the best brand of steering?

#1 - Seastar steering is what I have and I like it. I have a Detwieler and it seems to work just fine. I gotta agree with the loctite comment though. You have to really keep an eye on all the bolts.

#2 - I would go with 14" of set back. That's what I have on mine.

#3 - It's going to depend, but with mine loaded to fish, full gas, etc. I was able to run just over 88. With a partner I ran low 80's (best was around 84 - 85) if I remember right. That was with my 225 Pro Max.

#4 - Can't help you as far as cost. Both came on my boat when I got it.

Good luck!

A slow boat is like taking a moped to work ....sure you gonna get there, but man does it suck!
