To Fill or Not To Fill...That Is The Question Reply  Edit

I don't really winterize my boat. There are days in December, January, and early February here in Oklahoma that I may get the boat out and go to the lake but for the most part I am pretty much of a fair weather fisherman... mainly because I fish alone and being the only one on the water in cold weather and water is somewhat intimidating.

My question is about how much gas to keep in the tank during the winter. From what I've read there are two schools of thought on this subject. One, fill the tank along with the fuel stabilizer of your choice to prevent water condensation when things get cold. The second school of thought says, keep the tank as low as possible during the winter and when spring comes fill the tank with fresh gas. Since I never have a need to fill my tank all the way... I usually keep it between 1/2 and 3/4, the second opinion is the one I mostly agree with.

What do you guys think?

I keep mine as low as I can then get new fuel in the spring. Have done this for the last few years. B4 that I kept it full for winter. No problems either way.
Guess that didn't help much.

the best opion is to not quit fishing. I run ethanol stabil in mine all the time. Here in missouri I fish year round so my boat never sits more than a week or two but the stabil seems to help performance.

I think that you should move south where winterizing mean putting a pair of gloves and tons of jerkbaits in your boat

IMO Sta-bil or the other products keep gas in good shape for at least 6 months so I keep my tank 7/8 full in order to avoid condensation. I try to avoid water in the gas tank.

I try to run mine real low on fuel this time of year because I never know when the "last day of the year" will be. When that day hits, mine will normally sit for 10-weeks or so. I don't winterize except to change the LU and make sure I have quickleen and stable in my gas. I put fresh gas in her the first time out in the Spring. I've not had an issue to this point.

There was a great thread written last year with math to back up the "non issue" condensation presents in a plastic tank .

Either way, make sure that you unhook the tubing to the back of your water pressure gauge. If there is still water in the tubing, and it gets down in the mid to low 20's, the gauge will be frozen and will not work properly. Don't forget to lower your motor to make sure water does not freeze in the lower unit.

When I lived in Indiana and had to worry about winterizing...I always kept my tanks full with stabil added. Never had any issues. I've heard of guys unhooking the water pressure gauge, but I've never done that either, also with no issues. In reality...I doubt it makes a bit of difference what you do as far at filling or not filling your fuel tanks.

I am with mark on this one. I have been using this ethanol crap fuel for the last 7-8 years and have been leaving the the tank as low as possible and have not had any problems and if I get to use it in dec-jan I add only as much fuel as I think I will burn for that day.

I store mine full with stabil. mine will be in storage for at least 3 months, and have never had any problems...but I haven't put her away yet! as said, make sure you drain all the water. I also use compressed air to blow out water...just find where/if your motor has a fresh water flushing system and blow compressed air through it. I also do that to livewell, but I don't know if it's needed in this boat. my old boat had the live well up front, so I blew out the lines...both fill and drain. does any put a little anti freeze in the bilge pumps/bildge area???

I have always keep mine topped with stabil or sea foam. However this year I called a BBC sponsor who rebuilt my motor a couple years ago and ask the question. They told me to keep it as empty as possible and make sure a stabilizer is in it. I'm like other MO. residents who'll still have some open water and go out.

dont worry about the fuel level just make sure you treat it.
i used to winterize and de winterize 100 or so boats a year. never worried about how much fuel was in the tank but treated what was in it with sta-bil. Never had one fuel issue in the spring when i dewinterized em.

I use either Sta-Bil or Quicksilver Fuel Stabilizer year round. The biggest lake I regularly fish is only around 3500 acres and others are less than 1200 acres and thick with timber and my 150 Optimax hardly uses any gas at all so gas getting stale is a concern for me all year long.

Can you not find ethanol free over where you live? Around NE Oklahoma probably 1/2 of the gas stations offer non ethanol fuel, I keep my tanks completely full with non ethanol fuel and stabil as well.

I never use E-10 in my boat... no way. Problem is; regular all dead dino gas will start to deteriorate after 30 days.

It's not hard to find 100% gas around here. The station not far from me that I usually go to has both... if there's a big enough price difference I'll use E-10 in my truck with no ill effects.

I keep mine as low as possible, with Sta-bil in the tank. Just add a few gallons new each time I go out during the winter. In the spring, I empty my tank and put it in the truck or lawnmower and start anew.

I used to fill it up and add stabil until the Ethanol got me scared to gamble. Last year was my first year putting it away with hardly any fuel and this past spring it took me about 30-45 minutes to drain the tank using the fuel primer bulb, I added an extra extension of 3/8 line after the bulb. I used the gas up in my vehicle.

Just starting out with a relic restore, so pardon my ignorance. All previous things floating were paddled or stroked. By pressure gauge are you referring to the speedometer tube ??

Yes it's not a bad idea to unhook the speedo tube. But what he was referring to specifically is the water pressure gauge coming from the engine, if so equipped.

I drained both tanks, In the spring I'll put a few gallons in each tank, trailer it around the block to mix up whats in the tank, drain it again and run it in the truck. Then put fresh gas in the boat.
