viper 201 with 300 promax , setup help Reply  Edit

Hi guys i have a 1998 viper 201 with a 300 promax on it, i bought new in 98 and have tried lots of set ups to get the best performance, im currently running a 26 trophy plus prop, 8 inch bobs machine shop hydro jack plate, sportmaster gearcase with low water intake, wide open throttle around 6000-6100 rpm full tourney load, rev limiter is 6300, 2 200+lb guys, running 4 big batteries. I have been trying diffrent engine heights , prop shaft is currently even with pad
I love this boat , im just always looking for ways to make it even better, any input from you guys would be great.

What speed is the getting you? And what gear ratio is your sporty?

Where are you running the prop shaft compared to the pad on the boat? With a sporty, you can jack it up and still maintain water pressure.

I would guess the sportmaster case is costing you speed, a torque master would be better suited for your boat.

i dont know the gear ratio of my sportsmaster, im running the prop shaft about even with the pad , when i bought the boat new the factory "cobra boats" advised me to run the sportsmaster and not the torque master? 2 guys, tourney load, full fuel, 4 large batteries, 76mph on gps. The thing that bothers me is when i ordered the boat new from the factory i was told this setup would be a 85-90 mph boat?

I will take a stab at it. Here is what I would do:

1. Go to 12" Hydraulic Jackplate. (Bob's make a great one)
2. Get rid of the Sportmaster and go to a torquemaster lower unit. (you will not reach speeds in the 90's even with a 300hp engine)
3. Get your hands on a 27 Trophy Plus and after you run it with the changes above, send it along with your performance info to Mark Croxton and have him work the prop to the boat.

My guess is you would be 80-82mph loaded like you described.

Whoever advised you to run a Sportmaster over the Torquemaster cost you a lot of speed. Especially since you are running a pre "X" 300 Promax wich is really about a 290-295hp motor.

I agree with the above advice. Sell the Sporty and get a TorqueMaster

I have to agree with the Psychologist i would think this would be a great set-up.

I run a 12" Merc Para Lift plate on my 190d and its amazing how mush better it is compared to the 8" i had.
