PLEASE HELP ME PICK A PROP!! Reply  Edit

Hi ladies and gentlemen,
my question is simple and i'm sure, very common.
i have a 1999 201 cobra, single console, with a 2006 225 optimax.
i have a 12 inch rapidjack manual plate and currently run a 25p trophy plus.
i'm not sure if my RPM guage is accurate, but i have to hold the throttle at
5800 so it doesn't jump up past 6000. at 5800 RPM, i'm doing about 65 mph
GPS. i'm not a speed freak or anything but i'd like to know what some options would be in terms of getting a higher pitch prop in order to eat up some of those rpms without sacrificing hole shot ( which is killer on this boat...) and at the same time allowing me to pin the pedal to the floor and not worry about over reving and saving my shin muscle from cramping!!

thanks, scott

Try a 26p Trophy and a 26p Turbo TXP.

Have mark Croxton b&b the 25 trophy and he can work it to keep your rpms down. You won't find a better prop with your setup. The 25 trophy has a little different blade angle than the other trophys and so it runs better on the Cobras.

I run a 3.0 optimax as well on a coral 202 with a 8 inch jack plate, cupping the 25 tempest and balancing helps alot mine recently cracked a blade and I tried a 25 Fury which runs like a cupped 25 tempest but has a much better hole shot--I would try a Fury 25 or maybe a 26 in your case. The Fury is not supposed to crack blades as easily as the Tempest. With the Fury on mine much less throttle was required to plane the boat. Tope end is similar maybe slightly faster.

I was told by a dealer that a 12 inch jack plate would stress crack the transom of a viper boat so I went with an 8 inch plate as the Detwiler 6 inch plate that came on the boat would not hold position. Has the 12 inch plate caused any problems with cracking and do you run in any rough water?

A 12" jackplate will not stress the transom any more than an 8" in my opinion. The splashwell design of a Cobra was a poor design to begin with and made for a weak upper transom. Bass boat manufacters became wise to this weakness and began to create a concave splashwell area instead of the squared style. This new style strengthens the upper transom area and less cracks form because of it. The new style has less 90 degree angles which often have difficulty flexing properly. Cobra redesigned this area as well on their last production of boats.

In light of all of this. I believe that you are going to get some superficial cracks in the gel coat because of the design no matter what plate you put on the boat. I run a 12" plate and had tiny cracks in the gel from flexing. The cracks were only skin deep and were not causing the transom harm. I had them repaired and later found that most of the cracking was due to too much gel coat being used in that area. This causes the gel to be brittle and have poor flexing characteristics. After some glass reinforcement and the proper application of gel, I have had no cracks.

i do run in some rough water but i generally don't beat the hell out of the boat when the swells are 4-6 feet. i keep it trimmed way down and 'bust' the waves as opposed to trying to jump them. so far, i have had no issues whatsoever....no gelcoat cracks or anything.
thanks for the prop input.
