Just bought an Astro boat and need help! Reply  Edit

Hey guys!

I just bought a 1996 Astro 1850 DCX today and need some help. Is there anywhere i can obtain manuals of some sort for it? Or if anyone one here knows these boats can maybe help me. I need help on how to use the live wells first off. Also, the on-board charger as well. How do i know when the batteries are charged or what size charger is in there? And my RPM gauge doesn't work either, any thoughts on whats wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. THANKS

what is your email address and I'll send you the pdf file I had for my livewell controls. If you can't read the label on the charger in the bilge area then remove it and see if you can read any labels on it. I'LL try to find the pdf file on Teleflex trouble shooting a tach. It is not that hard. I can do it and I know nothing about electrical stuff. LOL

Got livewells going great now! I have a greater issue though. I cannot pump fuel into this boat for the life of me! It is a dual tank and i can't get either to take fuel. When i put pump in at the station and start fueling it snaps back like its full. After looking inside i see that the fuel is holding in right below the filler holes. Can anyone help me!?!

I'm confused. On my Astro 18FDX the dual tanks were located under the bench seat and all I had to do was hinge the seat forward and lift up a carpeted board and there they were. Can you do that on yours? Where is the gas that you are seeing? At the tank or at the actual fill fitting on the hull? If you are seeing gas at the fill hole then one can only assume that either the tanks are full to the fill hole or there is something in each fuel hose to the tank not allowing fuel into the tank. Does the engine run? What does your fuel gauge read on tank one and tank two?

Both tanks are in the compartment directly in front of the engine(yes engine runs). The are strapped together and labeled tank 1 and tank 2. Same area the bilge and livewell pumps are. They were both full when i bought it and just ran out. So this is the first time i am trying to fuel it. Both are completely empty and the gauges work. Only thing i can see is that the hoses from the fill hole are lower than the ones that attach to the tanks. Maybe gravity is not letting the fuel go in an upward motion?

OK, Does it appear in any way that the hoses may have been changed out at any time or maybe relocated or rerouted? The fill hardware mounted to the gunnels or on the rear sponsons? Check to see where the vent loses are run and the actual vent hardware on the deck. My 2 vents were located in the splashwell. On my new boat the vent tube and fill hardware are in one piece. If the air cannot escape from the tank while filling then you will not get any fuel into it. Just an idea and another place to look.

It doesn't seem like the hoses have been moved at all. But i have yet to see anyone else with a boat like mine. They are not clogged because i ran a hose up both with no problems. The only vent it has is directly over the fill holes. Each fill hole for each tank has two hoses running to it(one small and one big)? I just don't understand what is going on! I have added some pictures to see if that helps clear up how my tanks are set up. First pic shows the two fill holes and the two compartments the hoses run from. The first compartment behind the fill holes is the battery box and the fuel hoses run through there. The second pic is of the fuel tanks(second open compartment in 1st pic. Last pic is the battery box again showing how the hoses sit and the only vent in the boat.

OK, so it looks to me that you have 2 large hoses and 2 small hoses going to the fill caps on the gunnel. Is that correct? If so, that means that your tanks are vented thru the actual fill caps. I know this is an inconvenience but if it were mine I would remove all the hardware and hoses from the gunnel to the tanks and see what the heck is going on. You mentioned you already tried to put gas in so you will have to be careful with the fuel that is trapped in the large fuel line. Correct? Is the fuel still in the fuel line or did it eventually seep into the tank? Looks like a really nice boat! Keep us posted. Craig

Yup, two hoses to each filler and vented through the caps. I already ran a hose through all four fuel hoses and it doesn't seem like there is anything blocking them. I think the fuel eventually makes its way in though. Just to finally take er out i took off the sender caps on top of the tanks to fuel them! I am completely lost and frustrated with this situation! The boat has a manual lever to switch from tank 1, tank 2 and an Off, Fuel and Selector position. I have tried putting it on all positions with no luck????

All the fuel selector does is changes which tank the outboard is drawing fuel from. Not how the tanks are filled. Let's say you were to blow some air into the fill hose into the tank would you feel the air coming out of the vent? I remember filling my Astro and I could put my hand on the vent piece and feel air rushing out.

Took fill hoses and vent hoses off and there is nothing blocking either. I don't have an air compressor to blow air and doubt you could feel it by manually blowing! I give up on this stupid boat! I cannot even find anyone that has a boat like this that could tell me if there's is the same!

Don't give up on it man. That looks like a really nice rig ya got there. There has to be some kind of explanation. This may require a 4th and 5th hand, meaning another person to help ya out, but would I would try to do after knowing that there is nothing obstructing either hose or the neck on the tank is......Working with only one tank, disconnect the fill hose and vent hose from one of the gunnel fittings and hold up in the air above the level of the neck on the tank. Now have someone pour gas in from a gas can using what ever ya need to not spill gas and see if it flows freely into the tank. It just may be that there is not enough pitch from opening to fill tube on tank to allow the gas to dump into the tank. I once read on a post somewhere that this person had to go to a different gas station cuz of the slope of the parking lot was not allowing the gas to flow to his tank. Go figure!

I just took another look at your pics you posted and it looks to me like your hoses are lower in the battery compartment than they are where they attach to the fill neck on the tanks. Is that so? Can you tell by looking? If so, try strapping the hoses up higher in the hatch where they are dipping low in that battery compartment. That may be it.

Yes they sure are lower! That's what i was trying to explain in the first posts here. I am planning on taking the boat to the gas station and picking up slightly on the passenger side to see if it will flow any better. I tried lifting the hoses on the low spots and they kink a few inches below the fill holes if i do. I'm pretty sure this is the way it came stock though and if so this is a very pour design!

I was just reading about this very same issue that some of the Bullet owners are complaining of and is that they have a hard time filling their tanks. See if you can remove the fuel hose and vent hose from their respective tailpieces. Without causing kinks, stretch the hose as far as possible and shorten each hose and reattach to the fittings. Or if easier to get at do it on the tank fittings. If possible, use cable ties that have that small hole on the one end to put a screw thru and support them up somewhere. Some of the guys over there are actually cutting off 3" or more of hose cuz it droops lower than the tank and fill hole. So it is not just your boat. Imagine paying 50,000.00 for a boat and having to do that to get gas in your boat!!

I do not have much room to be cutting hoses but it is a good idea! I am amazed that this was not recalled or something! I just carry a screw driver with me and remove the tank 2 sender cap!

Oh for goodness sakes!!! Just cut the darn hoses shorter and cable tie them for support!

I have not had time to mess with it due to my work schedule but i will this weekend! I will probably just cut them right beside the tanks and put caps on them. The fill holes will just be for the vents and looks, LOL! We'll see how it goes.
