 Gas Fumes.... Reply  Edit

Well, I took the boat out for the first time yesterday. It ran awesome. Just awesome!!!

I am still smelling gas fumes coming from the boat. Even when I had the boat out on the water, I could smell gas while cruising at 20 - 30 mph.

The other day I pulled out the seat back cushions, the fuel sending unit gasket looked fine. I checked/tightened all the vent house. They too were all tight. I noticed the fuel fill hose was pretty cracked. So I replaced it with the same Coast Guard approved hose. Tightened all the hose clamps. Double check them again. All seem secure. I just don't understand why I smell gas fumes. When I open the rod lockers, gas fumes just roll out of there. I know over time the fumes will break down materials, glues, etc. It will cause things to deteriorate more rapidly. That's the reason why I want to find the problem most importantly the safety factor. Someone, please correct me if I am wrong, but the only fumes I should be smelling should be coming from the fuel vent/fill cap, no? Any other thoughts/advise?

Gas fume smells are a common complaint with these boats and other boats with plastic gas tanks. You are wise to check all connections, hoses, etc. that you can, but most people DO NOT find anything wrong.

Gas fumes work their way through the plastic tank by osmosis. Just fumes, no liquid gas. Then the fumes travel through the bilge & side gunnel passages into the rod lockers where they accumulate. The best solution I have found is to just leave the smelly compartments propped open to let the fumes out. If you have to store your boat outside under a cover, that may not work well for you.

My Coral fish & ski has the gas tank in the very back compartment with the batteries. It stays inside my garage. I just prop open the rear compartment lid and the fumes just go straight up. Otherwise, my front rod lockers get the gas smell.

Your gas tank is under the seats of course, so you would have to leave the rod lockers open. It is odd that you smell gas fumes while running. Possibly the boat sat closed up for a long time and is really saturated with fumes. If you can, remove everything for the lockers and clean/air it out real good and prop the rod lockers wide open for awhile and see if that cures it.

I have the exact same problem with mine. Iam all the time smelling gas fumes when it is sitting. It is almost sickning and both of my rear compartments and some in my lockers. You are the only other person that I have ever heard of smelling the fumes when running. I can usually smell my pretty well when running right after I fill up. You say that you were able to check hoses etc. by taking off the seat coushins? I would sure love to figure this out

When I first got my cobra I smelled the gas but when I took it in to cobra to get some work done on my transducers that where mounted to the hull they had to flush my boat out with water and dawn dish soap because there was a lot of oil and gas in the bottom of the boat and they said the pucks wouldn't bond good without cleaning it first. After they done that I didn't smell any thing for about a year, when I started noticing it again I shot about 10 gallons of water into the hull with the plug in and added about 1/4 of a bottle of dawn dish soap and just drove around town for a bit then came home pulled the plug and flushed the suds out and it has been good for a while again.

Thanks Alan,
I have the lockers cracked open and the boat is being stored outside. Just bought a brand new Carver Cover for it. (Performance Poly-Guard, The best one I could get.) I decided to store the boat outside because it was smelling the garage up. I will try these things and see what happens. If get success, I will report back. I appreciate your input on this.
Thank you again,
Ronnie

Hi point2301,
I was able to check the all hose connections and hose clamps. I made sure they were tight. (and they all were).
To get to your fuel tank and hoses, you need to remove your seat cushions. I was able to do that by removing 20 screws. (10 for each seat) They were kind of hard to find being that they were hidden in/under the carpet. There are 4 on the back casting/platform deck right behind the seat-back rests. Again, on the casting deck about 1" +/- behind the back rest of both operator and passenger seats.
There are 6 screws located below the back rest cushion. Flip forward/up the lower seat cushion to get these screws. There should be 2 - 1" screws that screw through the black nylon strap. Then there should be 4 - 1 3/4" screws hidden in/under the carpet. You should be able to screw they out going through the carpet without lifting up the carpet. The trick is finding the screws to unscrew...then trying to find the holes to put then back in....that was a bugger.

After you get the screws out, Pull the top of the back rest seat towards the Bow of the boat and push the bottom of the back rest towards the stern and work it out. Putting the cushions back. I would suggest ( if you have a pair of hemostats or artery forceps to clamp the lower black strap to have something to hold on to & pull while re-installing the back rest cushion back into place.

Once you have those out, you get access to hoses, clamps, wiring, etc. While you are there Make sure you look at your Fuel Fill Hose. Mine was badly cracked so I replaced it thinking that was where the gas smell came from. I was wrong, but it still needed to be replaced. It was only about $30.

Sorry for the lengthy instructions.....
Hope this helps, Any questions, shoot me an email. I can get you pics.

fishingfever,
Awesome idea. I am going to do that. It was pretty dirty under there as it should/needs to be cleaned. I will also shoot the pressure washer in there too. (great idea you have).

Thank you, sir!
