New To The Cobra Family Reply  Edit

I purchased my first Cobra Viper this past weekend and absolutely love it. It`s a 2001 201 DC with a Mercury 250 Pro XB. The only problem I can see is the jack plate is not big enough. I can`t get it within 1-3 inches of pad. It likes to chine walk when you get near 70 mph with it. Other than that i`m very pleased with the boat and glad I went with a Cobra.

Congratulations on the boat! You will enjoy the Cobra. The engine you have is a great one too. If you go the jackplate route, I can get you one for a good price. I recommend a 12" Bob's Hydraulic. Then you can adjust it on the fly. Let me know if you need some setup help and again Congrats on the boat!

CONGRATULATIONS and WELCOME TO THE FAMILY !!!

You have a beautiful boat and there is no need for a owners manual for your boat..... The people here in the Cobra forum IS your owners manual.

Hey Guys, thanks for welcoming me into the Family. The only question I have so far is how big is the fuel tank?

Tom...
Congrats on the new rig and welcome to the Cobra forum. To answer your question, your boat has a 45 gallon tank that came standard but a 34 gallon tank was available as an option. B-T-W, love the rumble of the 250 XB. Hope ya got the standard tank in there if you plan on "gettin' on it" a little bit from time to time.

I thought I would be on easy street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

Thanks Backlash! I was down to a 1/4 of a tank, and put 20 gallons in it, so I`m thinking it may have the 34 if the fuel gauge is correct. I`ll let it get closer to E next time and see what it`ll hold. The rumble of the XB is music to my ears.

Congrats! You might get McBee missing his Cobra if you take him for a ride in that one!

Tom...My guess is that you have the 45 gallon tank. Can't believe anyone would opt for a 34 gallon tank running a 250 hp. I think you'll find what most other Cobra owners have found...the gas tank sending unit doesn't give you an accurate reading...most have found when your gauge says empty there is still @ a 1/4 tank left. Better that way than to indicate you have a 1/4 tank and you're really on empty.

TX201 I tried to get him out in it today, but he was too busy. I think he was scuuured.

Backlash I hope your right. I need all the gas I can carry with this growling thing on the back. Here is a link to a short video my Girlfriend shot last Sunday on Lake Texoma. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QNWknyiq0
I`m headed to Lake Fork in the morning to get Steve to raise the engine for me. Then off to catch a pig or two.

Top speed GPS was 70. The pass in the video was 65. The prop shaft is a good 5" below pad which I have been told is too low. The jack plate won`t go any higher, so, Steve (Steves Custom Props) is going to raise the engine tomorrow so I can get it between 1"-3" below the pad.

Tom, Start at 3-3.5" below the pad and raise it in 1/4" increments until you find the sweet spot. Keep your eye on the psi gauge and don't let it get below 12psi at WOT. That 250 hp with a B&B prop should get you in the upper 70's. Good luck and keep us informed.

Thought I would give you guys an update... I put a new 27p Tempest on it and started at the 3" mark where Backlash had said to. After several runs and several trips to the ramp to pull it out and adjust it, I think I have it pretty close. I only have about a 1/4-1/2" left of adjustment before the jack plate is all the way up. At WOT it Chine walks, but I can keep it under control. The hole shot is really fast (2.5 sec) but it`s starting to sound like it wants to blow out after it breaks over. I`d like to go higher to hopefully get rid of the chine, but not sure if I should. I hit 77 mph (GPS) with all of my gear and half a tank of fuel.
Also, the fuel gauge was sitting on E after we got finished, and I put 26 gal in it to fill it up. Sounds like the previous owner opted for the 34 gal tank. Although, it is getting a lot better fuel mileage than I thought it would.
I went to Fork yesterday and put it in three foot waves for the first time. I was very impressed with how well it handled. I`m really happy with my Cobra.

You should be getting very little if any chine walk with a Cobra. Check your roostertail and make sure it isn't higher than your cowling. If it is you will need to trim down just a tad.

BEAUTIFUL boat. Something about the "lines" on a Cobra that set it apart from the rest. Love those boats!!! Still miss mine

Backlash: I have read that it shouldn`t be any higher than the cowling like you said. I`ll have to run it again, but I was trying to keep it no higher than the engine.

Joe, thank you. Sometimes I find myself just stareing at mine. They are a sweet looking boat.

Also make sure you balance your load, that also will help eliminate that Cobra slither!
