If it is 280 HP it is ONLY 105 over the rating max. Probably have a hard time finding a co-angler !

I remember reading somewhere that your numbers for hp are diffrent than ours. may want to check if that is US 280. And yes the max rating for 360's are 175us hp

The thing you got to realize is that the Merc racing 280's weight the same as any of the 2.5 litre block motors, the 175 included.....just got some more ponies. I think it might be a challenge to drive....but if I didn't fish any tournys, I wouldn't think twice about having on that boat. Just my .02 2002 Stroker w/ 250 Rude (the 250 Rude is for sale)
Can of tobaccy you say......no says I.

The 260s and 280s were actually about 30 lbs lighter than the standard iron sleeve 2.5s. The nicosil blocks are lighter. You won't be legal for most tourneys.

I would go for it if the price is right and sell the motors because they are race engine's they love gas and high maints. They have to be broke around every hundard hrs and love to be run around 62000-7000 rpms all the time and they are high dollars motors.Post on the 2.5 post on under engine Jay SMITH is the man he can tell you any thing about these engine and on the boat can handle it tthe problem is can you handler the boat (it goner be like a great dane with it paws in your back that motor is a pit bull)

they are rated for 175 hp. BUT that was for a rated at powerhead engine at the time. now engines are rated at the propshaft , and a 175 is like ovwerpowering it back in the day with a 200.........merc175 pro xs will make it scream..........legally Those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.

Yep might be a kick in the pants - kinda like a jet ski with a 454.

YEp, like was said above. Same weight as a 175 and the 280 wasnt a ill idling race motor like the 260. It has a different Electronics on it to make a better friendlier running motor. It was a racing motor just not bad mannered like the 260. I say give it a run and see if you like it. Get a DDT find out how many hours are on it. Then, decide if you want to keep it or sell it. There are lots of Aussie guys over on Scream and Fly they may be interested in buying it.

American ratings are useless but that boat with a 280 should fly. I'm guessing that you won't be able to drive it at its potential though.Guessing the 362 should run around 70, properly set up, with a 175 Mercury. With a 280 it should go over 90. That might be possible. ____________________________________________________________________ 1999 Allison w/05 150 optimax 2000 Dodge w/Cummins

I'm selling the boat in question. I asked a similar question over on the ranger boards as i'm not really familiar with mercs. Now looking at the possibility of seperating boat and motor.http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com...63873 _________________________________________________ 210 Blazer 250hpdi Phase III

That Ranger could maybe, maybe run 70 mph with a 200 hp Merc,it takes 10 hp to get another 1 mph,so it may run 78,but I doubt it.That setup is nice, but it,s not going to set the water on fire......Go for it....
