Did I get hosed? Reply  Edit

Check engine light came on in my wifes 03 Honda Pilot we have owned since new. Took it to the dealer and he called today. Says the cods pointed to a misfire which he attributed to fouled spark plugs. He changed the plugs and cleared the codes all for 496 dollars. I about flipped. He said it was 136.00 to diagnose the problem . Their flat fee for a diagnosis . This would be waved for warranty work , which it was not. The plugs are platinum so he said , 26 bucks each x 6. I said they are supposed to be good for 100 000 or more. He said yes but not always. Thenhe told me we were over on all scheduled maintenance items and for 1, 696.00 he would change the rear end fluid, break fluid , anti freeze , tranny fluids, cab air filter. I told hin no thanks , I could change the fluids my self . He told me if I did not use Honda fluids it would damage the systems. Salesmen for sure, do these service writers work on commision or what? I would have put in regular plugs for 496 bucks.

I always make them call to authorize before they start the work, no surprises that way.

Next time you get a check engine light go to Autozone, they will scan it and give you the code for free. Take the code and start Googling, most of the time you can get enough info to fix it yourself pretty quickly and even if you aren't able to fix it yourself you will at least be armed with the knowledge to know if you are being shafted by the dealer.

Thats the exact reason I never take my car to a dealer for repairs

You took it hard Dude.......Hopefully I'm wrong but a misfire code is almost never caused from a spark plug.....

You should change the brake fluid every couple years, it absorbs moisture. Changing the fluid will also prevent your lines from rusting out from the inside.

I work for a Honda dealer, so i'll be honest their labor rate sounds high... Ours is 73 a hour, which i think is high..anyways the plugs are platinum plugs that suggested retail from honda is around 17 dollars.. The fluids are recommended by Honda to use their genuine fluid.. The rear differential fluid is vtm4 fluid which sells for around 25 dollars for a gallon. You can change yourself and it's no problem. The brake fluid is schedule to be changed every 3 years, due to moisture mostly.. Trans fluid is pretty high too.. around 7 dollars a quart, however you can drain and fill due to no trans filter..and the cabin air filter is about 22 dollars and yes you can change it too... pretty easy.. hope this helps some

Different areas have different restrictions. In Maine you need to get a state inspection every year and if your check engine light is on you fail

so just wondering about this law,do they run a scan or just look to see if it is on in the dash?do they have a repair amount limit set,if you spend x amount of money and it is still on you get a waiver, they did that here with emitions tests..reason i ask is is my 97 f150 light has been on since i have owned it,it always comes up some egr type code,i spent well over $400 on sensors and still wouldn't stay out,it runs fine so i quit blowing money, the bulb finally burnt out..
yes you got hosed, you should have felt that rub your liver..

Most shops go off the light on the dash. There is no max repair amount set like there was with the limited emissions testing they had up here back in the 90's as a trial run. That's not to say you won't run into a shop that will sticker it anyway but if they get caught they will get a stiff fine and possibly lose there inspection license so it really isn't worth it for them to do for that whalloping $12.50 they make on it

Do I have any recourse? I told them I was not paying 500 bucks for a spark plug replacement. They said you cant have your car back until you pay. After a few choice words from me , thats all he kept saying. Makes me want to pick up the car and stop payment on the check. Now dont all you tough guys start saying you would put an azz whupping on him cause we all know thats not the real world.

If you signed the work order authorizing them to repair then no you do not have a leg to stand on. If you did not sign anything authorizing them to repair then they have no right to fix it without authorization. Most repair shops have you sign when you walk in.

Service business is a trust business. I have a GMC dealer I use for all my repairs. They are 55.00 an hour and have never once tried to hose me. By the way I have never bought a vehicle from them, I will but haven't yet.

Happened to me once, (Ford Dealership) did the work without authorization. I talked to the service manager and they waived the charges. Said they should have called with a quote before proceeding. Now they always call with estimate first.
