Checking your Trailer lights Reply  Edit

Just figured out how to check trailer lights; running, stop and directional with just one trip to the back of the trailer.

Hook up the trailer electrical connection. Turn on the running lights (ignore the dings), go to the back of the trailer and press the unlock button several times on your magic key fob.

good idea or you can lay a brick on the brake turn on the flashers and running lights and then go check or you can back up the trailer to a shiny glass window store front check everything and never have to get out

The same bulbs that control the flashers are the same part of the bulb the controls the brake lights. As the trailer goes, if the flashers works, the brake bulbs work.

I found the easiest way but most expensive. Run about 15mph over the speed limit when the nice gentleman stops you he will inform you what is working and what is not.

Great tip for checking the trailer lights, John.

Unfortunately it doesn't ALWAYS tell ALL of the story, at least not on late model GM trucks with the factory towing package. They use a "Lighting Control Module" to control all of the lighting functions. It has SEPARATE CIRCUITS for the truck lights AND EACH LIGHT ON THE FACTORY 7-PIN TRAILER CONNECTOR. I've had to replace this module - about $85 for the part + LABOR - on both my '04 Chevy Tahoe and '04 GMC Yukon XL. The symptoms in both cases were the same - all truck lights worked fine all the time and all of the lights on the trailer worked fine EXCEPT the Right Brake Light - it didn't work at all. That means running lights, turn signal lights and the left brake light worked on the trailer. Not the best when running down the road, but workable. The real problem comes when you have to turn left and brake. Left turn signal on = left brake light on trailer off - they use the same bulb filament. Since the right brake light is inoperative all the time, you now have NO BRAKE LIGHTS AT ALL! Not good!!!

If you own one of these trucks - 99-06 GM pickup or 2000-'06 SUV - and have this problem, check this out. It could save you from being rear-ended. There is more info and pictures on this page. Mine both use the black one, GM part number 12450284

Jim, didn't know about this module. Truth is, I check the trailer lights using a battery and wiring harness I made at the shop. Separating the trailer from any tow vehicle tells me if the problem is actually in the trailer or the two vehicle. using a flat plug and grounding the battery to the trailer frame, brown should burn running and lights, green is right and yellow is left brakes/turn signal. If the trailer lights work separated from the tow vehicle, then there is problems to chase on the vehicle. John

Mine has been doing that for a year now. Have crawled all up underneath checking wiring, fuse block, fuses. Had no idea about this. Mine is right side too but only when I have trailer plugged in. Thanks!

razorback73 - Is the problem ONLY on the trailer and the truck is OK with or without the trailer? That's what both of mine did. If so, I'd bet money it's the module. I had to lead the techs at the dealer by the hand to find the problem on the first one (Tahoe) because it was still under warranty.

Yes only when I have trailer pluged in. Truck is always fine. Sounds exactly like what you said. Dealer has never been able to find it. I appreciate your post. Thank You.
