If seats and carpet need replaced then that price is too high. Don't know what a re-carpet job costs where you live but it's approximately $500-$600 around here, and seat replacement isn't cheap either. Also, be prepared for some immediate additional expenses if things like batteries and tires need replacement. Eventually you'll need to upgrade the electronics too. One good thing though is that your original seats (color, style, etc) are still available from the manufacturer...Dean's Top & Canvas in Mountain Home, AR. They also just recently came aboard as a BBC sponsor. All you'd have to do is call them and give them the serial number of your boat (located on the upper right hand side of the transom) and they have all the info needed to reproduce your seats. One word of caution...Be sure to take the engine to a certified mechanic and have the engine thoroughly checked out.
I thought I would be on easy street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

Motor checks out good. It's got new fishfinders and the trolling motor is 2 years old. The boat itself looks great, paint is nice and shiney. I haven't made an offer on it yet... what do you think would be a reasonable offer? I was actually thinking about doing the re-carpeting myself. Done a lot of reading on here and looks like a job i wouldn't be afraid to tackle. And you gave me a lead on seats, so i'd be set there. Thanks.

I'd check with Dean's Top & Canvas and find out what new seats would cost and deduct that from the asking price. At least use what is needed to get the boat back in order as a bargaining tool. Also depends how long it's been up for sale..the longer, the more anxious the seller will be to get strike a deal. If everything checks out, you'll be happy with a Cobra.

Pay the money and have the re-carpeting done by someone else if you can afford it. I did my old 16' Astro and it was a pain in the arse. I for one will never do it again.

Well I am the new owner of a Cobra. Got the price right and hooked her up and pulled her home. Now it's time for the fun to start. My first project is carpet and seats. I have read countless posts on here about replacement carpet and everyone seems to love the 24oz. Basscat Carpet. I have, however, read that it is sometimes really tight on the lids. Anyone that has recarpeted a Cobra.... what did you use and how well do the lids work? I would hate to drop a bunch of money on carpet and then have to pry the lids open with a crowbar!

In 1998 Cobra used 20oz marine carpeting. If you go to 24oz carpeting you may not be able to close your hatch lids.

I think you must have dyslexia? 38? Don't I wish! I'd even take that number for a waistline.

I think the more accurate statement would be that you WON'T be able to open or close your lids! Mine are tight enough that I never even thinnk about latching them when running in rough water, and yes I have had the boat completely out of the water at Falcon. I am not sure if the latches will even turn any more, I haven't used them in years. 20 oz is just fine!! I assume no responsibility for the opinions expressed in this email if the opinion proves to be incorrect. I will however accept 3.5 mil in bail out money should the opinion prove to be wrong and the carpet manufacturer did not expressly state the tolerances and clearences needed for their product. It's the new American way!! Where did the puking icon go???
