When is horsepower too much??? Reply  Edit

I have a Procraft 215 combo, it still has the original Mercury 225 EFI. Nothing wrong with the motor at all. However, I have a line on a newer Mercury 300xs.
The boat is max rated for 250 hp. Can putting a 300 hp motor on this boat be a bad idea???
Looking for simply more speed and I figure this should help alot.
Any feedback would be appreciated, both positive and negative.

Usually going above the horsepower rating is a bad idea for several reasons. One the manufacture put the rating there for a reason, safety. Two, you may find it hard to impossible to get insurance and if you were to have an accident with a boat over the horse power rating you open yourself up for even more liability. Third if you fish tournaments it is a no brainer that 99% of tournaments have a rule that a boat cannot run horse power greater than it is rated for.
I would say if you truly want to be a speed demon, you or anyone running a Procraft is running the wrong boat. I love mine, but know I am only going so fast with the design.

If the bia rating is 250 I would not excede this rating find a 250pro xs most tournament trails or clubs will not allow you to fish there tournaments if the BIA rating is exceded bacause of safty that rating is there for a reason the transom may not take the 50 more hp or the weight ect just my 2 cents

Sometimes a design will only go so fast no matter what kind of motor is on it. not saying this is the case here but sometimes there are design "walls" that take a LOT of HP to punch through it.

If you want a fast Procraft fis one of those FX20's (I think that was them) from the mid 90's. They would haul the mail

Although not a speed demon, I found a huge increase in speed and performance when I upgraded the 200 efi on my 210 pro to a 225efi. Holeshot was much better and topend went from 57 to 72. My boat was only rated for a 225, so I tried to stay within the recommended limits. As others have suggested, perhaps a pro XS will give the extra ummph that you crave.

There are really only two types of fishing lures:
1) Those that I can't catch fish with,
2) Those I haven't tried yet.

Vatree,

There must have been something seriously wrong with the 200 to see that kind of gains with only 25hp.

As for the 300XS. There is virtually no difference in weight. In fact, they are both 505lbs. (20'' shaft).

Other than insurance, liability, and tournaments restrictions, I don't ANY reason why the boat itself would not be able to handle the engine.

I ran a 210 with a 250XS and am thinking of upgrading to a 300XS and just running 250 decals... LOL!!

2.5 liter vs the 3 liter 225 is why I think it gained so much. It was like a completely other boat
