1985 VL485 trolling motor question Reply  Edit

Hi all,
I recently purchased an 85 VL485 with the standard bow-mounted 36lb trolling motor. The previous owner gave me a 74lb trolling motor because he felt the 36lb unit didn't provide the necessary ummph for trolling.

There is one catch however. The current 36lb troller is plugged into a 3-wire outlet on the bow and new trolling motor is a 4 plug unit.

I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to these things, so I'm wondering what the level of effort would be to use the newer 74lb unit. Can I just swap out the outlet for a 4 prong outlet? On the face of the current outlet it shows 12/24v. Does that mean I can simply swap it for a 24v 4 prong outlet? Would I have to rewire the entire outlet in the boat?

The boat currently has 3 batteries. I have no idea if that is the stock set up. There are two batteries linked together to power the accessories, so I'm thinking there should be ample juice to power the troller.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

the two batteries together shoudl be hooked to nothing but your troller,The third is your starter and accessory battery. The plug can be replaced from either end either the plug on the troller or on the boat side,Get in touch with jones trolling motor here on the boards or in the troller/electronics forum and he can get you what you need.
