set-up after low water pick up added. Reply  Edit

I recently sent my lower unit to bobs' machine shop and had a low water pick up put on. If I raise the jack plate up and keep good water pressure, do I need to go higher pitch in the prop. Merc 150 xr4 with a 4 blade trophy 21 pitch, with blades cupped 4 degrees. 5600 rpm, WOT. 2 guys and all our gear? Or is there another suggestion, more top end speed. It comes out of the hole like a scalded dog now, on plane in less the 6 seconds. Had the vent holes on the prop drilled out to one half inch. Oh speedo says 58 MPH, GPS says 61.9. Thanks, Bill Taylor

Well, I've got some sad news for you there Bill, you will probably see a decent drop in your top speed.

You didn't mention what you've got that motor hung on, that will sure make a difference on any honest advice given.

Is there anything I can do to at least keep my current top end speed? Or maybe agin anything at all? Or am I just screwed for putting the low water pick up nose cone on in the first place? They NEVER said anything about loosing anytop end. As a matter of fact, they boast about how much faster my top end will be !!!!!!!!!

Sorry dude...you're screwed. The reason? More drag in the water.

Only when you start getting in the rare 80+mph range and start getting close to blow out would you want low water pickups.

Your boat is too heavy, motor too small to run a surfacing prop that would benifit from the nosecone and pickups.

Good news, you can run it really high in shallow water now.
