Todd - How do you install trim extenders?

They replace the trim pads on a mercury. Where the trim rods push against the lower unit. Five minutes and you're done.

They should only be used on a merc.

Pat - can you tell me why not to use them on an OMC? I have a 175 evinrude and I'd like to hopefully get that last bit of lift on the nose.

It will put the inside frame outside of the outside frame, not a good thing, very good chance of breaking something you really don't want broken.

I'm taking that by screwing the extenders into the end of the trim shaft, the shear extra size of the diameter of the extender will in effect put the outside diameter outside of the bracket. If this is correct, what if I can get those extenders machined down in diameter so that when they engage the cast engine bracket, they in fact would remain inside? Does this make sense and would that help cure the problem you stated earlier?

You can just put some washers behind the pad and get just enough. Be very careful you keep the inside bracket within the outside bracket.

Reality though, if you're having to leverage that much to find some lift, you're probably off somewhere else.
