Need help with 10" manual jack plate/ prop size/ chime walking Reply  Edit

I have a 21 ft 2100 Super Vee (BeeLine Bass Boat) I bought this boat New Oct 08 and it came with 27 degree pitch 3 blade Tempest prop, this is on 250 mercury pro XS. The jack plate came all the way down and I have played with it , right now i have it set 3.5 inches below pad, water pressure is good but when i get to around 5000 rpm i get a bad chime walk. Now I did try a 24 pitch three blade tempest and what a difference, was able to get 5300 rpm with very little chime wallking. then i bought a 25 pitch 4 blade trophy and was 5600 but got some chime walk??? what do I do next?

Chi-N-e walking is 90% driver, 10% setup. No slam, but unless you have a basic understanding of what to do, no amount of setup will eliminate the wobblies, it's a nature of a v hull.

So are you saying that the 18ft champion with a 150 evinrude with no jack plate i sold, just never had the power to get it to that point on the v-hull. Not that it was not fast, but no 250. I have had 14 boats and been fishing for years, but never had the power of the 250?? Chris

Yep, your champ with a 150 wouldn't get to that point.

This might seem harsh, it's not.

It's going to be somewhat like learning to drive, you will be experiencing new forces up to now you haven't seen.

What you have in effect is a two foot square of fiberglass with a ton of boat balanced on, with a propeller trying to twist the whole thing sideways. What you will need to learn is to drive to prevent the imbalance before it starts, and then how to correct while underway.

Imagine riding a skateboard with a 40 mph crosswind.

Best advice is to beg a buddy with a chine walking beast *triton, allison, etc* and have them spend a half hour with you driving your boat to learn how to balance it and what it really feels like. It's much smaller motion than you expect, small moves make big differences.

go to the trition chat on this site, one of the engineers for triton defends chine walk and gives step by step instructions on how to learn to drive a boat that chine walks

Good luck, it takes alot of seat time. I am at same stage of the game also. I run it till it just starts chine walkin and am learning how to control it. Then SLOWLY go faster and learn how to hold that. Small increments at a time. VERY IMPORTANT: when it gets out of hand DO NOT let out of it just TRIM DOWN and it will stabilize. Quickly letting out of it is very dangerous, always trim down first then let off. one day I'll learn it.
