HDS 8 questions, please help asap... Reply  Edit

I'm planning on buying a fishfinder ASAP. Either humminbird 1197 or Low HDS8. My question is, Does the Lss come with a different transducer. If it does wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a HDS8 without a trans and buy the LSS instead of buying the HDS with the trans and a LSS with its trans? Or do I have this completely wrong?I'm trying to go the cheapest route. Can't you tell? And,... is the HDS internal gps or does it come with another puck to install? A friend already gave me a Humm 1197 trans. so i'm torn between the two. I like both.

The HDS has one ducer, that is the 2D sonar ducer. If you want the Structure Scan, it's a completely different package that you add to the HDS 8 and it has it's own transducer. In the end, you will have 2 different ducers for the 8 & SS. As for the antenna, it is internal and no puck is required but you can add the new LGC 4000 if wanted to.

Yes the LSS-1 does come with a transducer but it is for side/down scan only, you will still need a transducer for normal 2d sonar. I too looked at the humminbird vs. HDS system; I went with the HDS with an HDS-8, HDS-7 and LSS-1. After studying the posted screen shots of both systems I'm glad I went the way I did.

I am bias, go with the HDS. I prefer the HDS screen over the 997 which I owned. Order your HDS with the 'ducer, you will need it when using the LSS-1. If you have the extra cash, go with the LGC 4000 for it will provide better preformance then the stock internal. The LGC 4000 is on my short list.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I thought maybe the LSS was like the humm and had 2d all in one transducer. Yep, the structure on the Low down scan looks better and the side imaging on the humm looks better to me. It may just be me.

Speaking of the 4000. Just how do you know which antenna it's reading when you have them both connected? I have a aluminum hull and I want my antenna over my transducer for way point marking. <*)}}}><

For the HDS units you can go into the network settings and tell the unit which antenna to use. I do not have the 4000 but have bot units reading there own internal antenna.

Two responses. I had a 997SI and sold it and bought a HDS8 and Structure Scan. For me there is no comparison. I am so much happier with the Lowrance. On the LGS4000 you can force the unit to use the internal antenna, use the LGS4000 or use the one that gives you the most accurate reading at that point in time.

Ditto that question. I just want to make sure...

I am buying an HDS8 shortly and am currently using a 520C. I was told that I could use the 520's external antenna and the puck already mounted in the hull for the HDS8, then move my 520 to the bow panel and network them together to use the same antenna.

Yes the 2000 will work with the HDS units. I had mine setup with it at one time. You can also have the HDS unit share it's internal antenna over the network. So either way will work.

Thanks. My antenna is mounted on the back of the boat, so it would be closer to the ducer puck and the LSS, so I will probably use it. Now, I just need to decide when to buy. I'm pretty tight when it comes to spending money..

Nothing wrong with being tight with your money; I imagine you work hard to earn it. All the more reason you should do your homework and compare before you spend.

I'm a Project Engineer by trade, so I am used to investigating everything to the max! I drive my wife crazy when we decide to buy a car. Decide now, buy one in 6 months...but I always get a good deal! Definitely no "snap decisions" made on large purchases. Heck, if I would have bought one last year, I would have a HB that I couldn't link up with my 520.

I agree 110%. there are just SO much to these HDS units, the possibilities are literally almost endless. Ive been reading and doing my homework on them for 3 months now. While Ive decided which units Im going to purchase, I still havent figured out what configuration Ill use yet There are no doubt these HDS units are da bomb though. And a big hello fellow Missourian
