03 Procraft SP 200 w/ Merc 200xs NEED HELP! Reply  Edit

I own a SP 200 w/ a 200xs and feel it should perform better on top end. I have a 10" jackplate and the prop sits about 3.25" below the pad. Right now there is a 23P Tempest on it and at WOT I can only get the RPM's to about 5800 (max RPM is 6500)and MPH rarely gets to 59. I have played with JP hieght before and feel it is as high as it should be, I got more chine walk than I was comfortable with. I also have a 22P Tempest and it winds up good but doesn't offer anymore speed at the higher RPM's The prop has been worked on before and it has the guys name etched on it. I called him one day and he said that my hull is too heavy for that motor and I would be happier swapping it with a regular Optimax. Is there any other alternative to an engine swap. Thanks for any help!

He is right. So many people feel that hanging a small-block high rpm motor from a "Racing Division" is going to make their tank of a bass-boat go faster than all the other bubba's out there.

99.9% of the time it just doesn't work. Propping is very hard. and even when you find one that kina works you are still no faster (and alot of time SLOWER) than a regular bass motor, as well with a very sluggish hole-shot. The 2.5L series of motors from MErcury Racing were designed for HIGH PERFORMANCE LIGHTWEIGHT Boats. Your typical bassboat does NOT fall into this category. This is the Allison, Bullet, STV, Hydrostream, Stroker, Norriscraft type boats. Ideally, a motor swap for a 3.0L 200 will yeild the best results. Until then, a LOT of trial and error and most likely many trips to the prop shop. Hopefully it doesn't have the Sportmaster lower-unit (the sleek pointy one), does it have a 15 or 20" shaft? Is the boat balanced (Chinewalk). There are a lot of variables that will optimize what you have. At least you can get what you have running to its potential. Also, IMO 5800 rpm is lugging that motor and you are on borrowed time if you keep it up.

Thanks for the information. I assumed that this was not the original motor when I bought the boat but was not aware of how the weight of the boat would hinder the motors performance. I did find a local prop guy this morning. He made a couple of alterations and asked that I take it out and run it. The bow seemed to be more out of the water and I was able to get the RPM's up to almost 6100 with the MPH up to 61 in a very strong headwind. I am taking it back to him tomorrow and he is going to yweak it a little more and polish it. He said he beilves that might get me a little more RPM's.

I'll measure the shaft tomorrow and let you know how it turns out after his work is complete. As far as chinewalk, the boat isn't too bad. Once I get I plane I trim until it starts and then back off a little and it rides pretty smooth. I did play with the jackplate a little before but ended up putting it back to it's original location. I am getting 11 PSI at WOT throttle. Thanks again for the help!

I had an '05 Super Pro 200 with a 200 Optimax with a 25 pitch Tempest plus set at 3.25 below the pad. My numbers were 73.8 gps at 5700 rpm.
