2001 180FS Steering problem Reply  Edit

Does anyone know if this boat has a hydrolic fluid resivor for the steering wheel? It is very tuff to turn the steering while while running in the water. Any tips of pinpointing the potential problem? Thanks.

If it turns easily at idle and slower speeds, but is hard to turn at higher speeds, it is most likely steering torque. It is caused by the directional rotation of the propeller.

You can tackle the problem a couple different ways. If you have a jackplate, you can make adjustments to see if the torque gets less at different heights. They also make a product called a torque tab, that you can install to help counter the torque.

Here is a link to it. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/...sults

The simplest solution may be to just trim up after the boat planes. Most cable steer motors are pretty hard to steer unless you trim up far enough.

Thank you for your replies. It does seem to be hard to turn even at idle speed. I don't have a jackplate on this boat will check my steering cables.

If it is cables most likely the steering tube on the engine is gunked up or rusty inside.
